What is supposed to be manipulative and cunning comes off as the moves of an obsessed angry teenager. Her winning the eligible “widowed” bachelor, her becoming Bea 2.0, her being accepted by the most popular players of the neighborhood. It’s Jane and her fake it till you make it mentally. The main focus of a book titled “The Wife Upstairs” is not the wife. It would make a great Lifetime movie, but as a book, it’s just scattered. While describing the many plot lines to a friend of mine she said “it sounds like a Lifetime movie” and she wasn’t wrong. It’s Rachel Hawkins’s first adult novel and you can tell.
When Blanche’s body is finally found, and with head injuries that suggest murder, suspicions rise around town making Jane, who’s already faking her way into the top social circles, nervous about who she’s really engaged to. Eddie brings her food, water, sex, and books every couple of days to keep her occupied, but she’s just up there. Quickly we learned that Bea, the wife upstairs, is, in fact, alive and well and locked in the upstairs panic room. Immediately the two fall in love and have a whirlwind romance landing them engaged and planning a wedding within only a few months of knowing each other. While out admiring her favorite house in the neighborhood, Eddie, a recent widower after his wife Bea and her best friend Blanche go missing on a girl’s trip to the lake, almost hits her with his car. Running from something seemingly so awful in her past that she needed to change her name and leave town to live in a cramped apartment with a creep and walk dogs for the elite where she steals whatever tchotchkes or piece of jewelry catches her eye. Summary: Jane is a 23-year old woman with the mental age of an angsty 17-year-old.
